Thanksgiving, an act of warfare
Thanksgiving is not only a time to express our gratitude to God for his blessings, but also a powerful weapon to resist the enemy and advance God's kingdom. Thanksgiving is an act of warfare, because it:
- Declares God's goodness and faithfulness in spite of our circumstances. When we give thanks to God, we affirm that he is good, that he loves us, and that he is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). We also acknowledge that he is faithful, that he keeps his promises, and that he will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Thanksgiving helps us to focus on God's character and attributes, rather than on our problems and challenges. It also helps us to remember his past deeds and miracles, and to trust him for the future.
- Defeats the lies and accusations of the enemy. The enemy wants us to doubt God's goodness and faithfulness, to complain and murmur, to be discontent and ungrateful. He wants us to believe his lies and accusations, that God does not care for us, that he has abandoned us, that he is not able to help us. But when we give thanks to God, we refute the enemy's lies and accusations with the truth of God's word. We also silence the enemy's voice and magnify God's voice in our lives.
- Releases God's power and provision in our lives. When we give thanks to God, we align ourselves with his will and purpose for our lives. We also open ourselves to receive his grace and favor, his peace and joy, his strength and wisdom. Thanksgiving activates our faith and invites God's intervention in our situations. It also releases God's power and provision in our lives, as we see in the examples of Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes (John 6:11), Paul and Silas being freed from prison (Acts 16:25-26), and the leper being healed by Jesus (Luke 17:15-19).
Remember, God lives in the praises of His people an indication that thanksgiving is an act of warfare, because it honors God, resists the enemy, and releases God's power and provision in our lives. Let us therefore give thanks to God always, in all circumstances, for this is his will for us in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Let us also encourage one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with our hearts to the
Lord (Ephesians 5:19). And let us enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and bless his name (Psalm 100:4).
