Godly Parenting in the 21st Century
Parenting is one of the most challenging and rewarding tasks that God has entrusted to us. As parents, we have the responsibility and privilege of raising our children in the fear and knowledge of the Lord. However, parenting in the 21st century can also be very daunting and stressful, as we face many pressures and temptations from the world. How can we be godly parents in this modern age? Here are some biblical principles that can guide us:
- Recognize that children are a gift from God. Psalm 127:3-5 says, "Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate." Children are not a burden or a problem, but a blessing and a reward from God. We should cherish them, thank God for them, and dedicate them to him.
- Train up your children in the way they should go. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Training involves teaching, instructing, correcting, disciplining, and modeling godly behavior and values. We should not leave our children to their own devices or follow the trends of the world, but teach them God's word and ways. We should also pray for them and with them, and lead them to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Honor your parents and teach your children to do the same. Ephesians 6:1-3 says, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother' (this is the first commandment with a promise), 'that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.'" Honoring our parents means respecting, loving, caring, and obeying them. It also means honoring their legacy and heritage. We should honor our parents as a way of honoring God, who gave them to us. We should also teach our children to honor us and other authorities that God has placed over them.
- Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 says, "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Provoking our children to anger means being harsh, unreasonable, unfair, abusive, or neglectful. It can cause resentment, rebellion, bitterness, or depression in our children. Instead, we should bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Discipline means correcting and guiding our children with love and wisdom. Instruction means teaching and equipping our children with knowledge and skills. Both discipline and instruction should be based on God's word and will.
Godly parenting is not easy, but it is possible by God's grace and power. As we seek him and follow his principles, we can raise our children to love him and serve him in this generation and beyond. May God bless you as you parent for his glory!
