Fruits of the Spirit, and practical examples
The fruits of the Spirit are the characteristics and qualities that God produces in the lives of those who are led by his Spirit. They are the evidence and manifestation of God's presence and work in us. The fruits of the Spirit are listed in Galatians 5:22-23, which says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
But what do these fruits mean, and how can we display them in our daily lives? Here are some practical examples of how we can bear the fruits of the Spirit:
- Love: Love is the first and greatest fruit of the Spirit, because God is love (1 John 4:8). Love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a choice and an action. Love is to seek the best for others, even at the cost of ourselves. Love is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). Love is to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Love is to love one another as Christ has loved us (John 13:34).
- Joy: Joy is not the same as happiness, which depends on our circumstances. Joy is a deep and lasting delight in God and his salvation, regardless of our situations. Joy is to rejoice always in the Lord (Philippians 4:4). Joy is to count it all joy when we face various trials, knowing that they produce perseverance and maturity in us (James 1:2-4). Joy is to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15).
- Peace: Peace is not the absence of conflict or trouble, but the presence of God and his assurance in our hearts. Peace is to be at peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ, who has reconciled us to him by his blood (Romans 5:1). Peace is to be at peace with ourselves, knowing that we are accepted and forgiven by God (Romans 8:1). Peace is to be at peace with others, as far as it depends on us, living in harmony and unity with them (Romans 12:18).
- Patience: Patience is the ability to endure hardship, suffering, delay, or provocation without anger or resentment. Patience is to wait on the Lord and his timing, trusting that he knows what is best for us (Psalm 27:14). Patience is to bear with one another in love, forgiving each other as God has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:2-3). Patience is to be slow to anger and quick to listen, understanding that human anger does not produce the righteousness of God (James 1:19-20).
- Kindness: Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Kindness is to show God's kindness to us by being kind to others, especially to those who are needy or undeserving (Ephesians 2:7). Kindness is to do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers (Galatians 6:10). Kindness is to be compassionate and merciful, just as God is compassionate and merciful to us (Luke 6:36).
- Goodness: Goodness is the quality of being morally upright and virtuous. Goodness is to reflect God's goodness by doing what is right and good in his sight (Psalm 34:14). Goodness is to walk in the light as he is in the light, avoiding every form of evil (1 John 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 5:22). Goodness is to let our light shine before others, so that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
- Faithfulness: Faithfulness is the quality of being loyal, reliable, and trustworthy. Faithfulness is to be faithful to God, who is faithful to us even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). Faithfulness is to keep his commandments and follow his will for our lives (1 John 2:3-6). Faithfulness is to be faithful in the little things that he has entrusted to us, knowing that he will reward us accordingly (Luke 16:10).
- Gentleness: Gentleness is the quality of being mild, humble, and courteous. Gentleness is to be gentle as God is gentle with us, not treating us as our sins deserve, but graciously pardoning and restoring us (Psalm 103:10-14). Gentleness is to be gentle with others, not quarreling or fighting, but being peaceable and respectful (2 Timothy 2:24-26). Gentleness is to be gentle with ourselves, not being harsh or self-condemning, but accepting God's grace and forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
- Self-control: Self-control is the ability to control our impulses, desires, and emotions. Self-control is to be self-controlled by the power of the Holy Spirit, who helps us to overcome the flesh and its passions (Galatians 5:16-17). Self-control is to be self-controlled in our thoughts, words, and actions, taking every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Self-control is to be self-controlled in our appetites and pleasures, not being enslaved by anything that hinders our relationship with God (1 Corinthians 6:12).
These are some of the fruits of the Spirit, and some practical examples of how we can bear them in our lives. The fruits of the Spirit are not something that we can produce by ourselves, but they are the result of God's work in us as we abide in him and he abides in us (John 15:4-5). As we grow in the knowledge and love of God, we will also grow in the fruits of the Spirit, and we will glorify God and bless others by our lives. May God help us to bear much fruit for his glory!
