Building intimacy with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and who is sent to dwell in the hearts of those who believe in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is our helper, comforter, counselor, teacher, guide, and friend. He is also the source of our spiritual life, power, gifts, and fruits. He is the one who makes us more like Jesus, and who enables us to worship God in spirit and in truth.
But how can we build intimacy with the Holy Spirit? How can we grow closer to him and experience more of his presence and work in our lives? Here are some practical steps that can help us:
- Acknowledge the Holy Spirit. The first step to building intimacy with the Holy Spirit is to acknowledge him as a person, not a force or a thing. He has a mind, a will, and emotions. He can be grieved, quenched, or resisted. He can also be pleased, honored, or welcomed. We should acknowledge the Holy Spirit as our Lord and Master, who has the right to direct and control our lives. We should also acknowledge the Holy Spirit as our friend and companion, who loves us and wants to fellowship with us. (Romans 8:26)
- Invite the Holy Spirit. The second step to building intimacy with the Holy Spirit is to invite him into every aspect of our lives. We should not limit the Holy Spirit to certain times or places, but we should invite him to fill us, lead us, teach us, and empower us every day. We should also invite the Holy Spirit to reveal himself to us, to show us his glory, his grace, and his gifts. We should ask him to speak to us, to guide us into all truth, and to remind us of Jesus' words. (Isaiah 11:2)
- Yield to the Holy Spirit. The third step to building intimacy with the Holy Spirit is to yield to him in obedience and submission. We should not resist or ignore the Holy Spirit's voice or conviction, but we should listen and respond to him with faith and action. We should also not quench or hinder the Holy Spirit's work or manifestation, but we should cooperate and participate with him in his purposes and plans. We should allow him to transform us into the image of Christ, and to use us for his glory. (Act 2:38)
- Enjoy the Holy Spirit. The fourth step to building intimacy with the Holy Spirit is to enjoy him as our greatest treasure and joy. We should not take the Holy Spirit for granted or neglect him, but we should appreciate and cherish him as God's precious gift to us. We should also not grieve or sadden the Holy Spirit by our sins or unbelief, but we should delight and please him by our love and faithfulness. We should cultivate a personal relationship with him, and enjoy his presence, his peace, his power, and his love. (Act 1:8)
These are some of the steps that can help us build intimacy with the Holy Spirit. As we do so, we will experience more of God's presence and power in our lives. We will also grow in our knowledge and love of God, and we will bear much fruit for his glory. May God help us to build intimacy with the Holy Spirit!
